Backyard Fire Pits

When you decide to add a backyard fire pit to your property, the first thing you want to do is decide on a safe location. It is important not to put the backyard fire pits near the house or any other structures.

You also don’t want to place it in a high-traffic area or near a play set. Check with your local fire department to see what regulations your community has on backyard fire pits, if any. Many communities have actually banned fire pits, and you can be heavily fined if you are reported having one.

Secondly, you want to decide if you are going to buy a fire pit or create one. Creating a fire pit really isn’t that difficult, but the decision is your. You can buy a pre-made fire pit or buy plans for making a fire pit. Due to the increased popularity of backyard fire pits, they can be found at most home and garden outlets.

If you decide to buy a pre-made backyard fire pit, than you can chose a self-contained one, which is safer to have on or near a stone patio. You can buy ones that are raised up in the center of a table. They have screens to go over the actual flame so you can still cook over them or roast marshmallows without fear of damaging the fire pit. This is one of the many advantages of choosing backyard fire pits over an outdoor propane fireplaces.

To make a backyard fire pit, first you want to clear the area you plan to put it. Dig up the grass and create a circle. Once you have dug the entire area down a couple inches, you can start the construction. Line the edge of the circle with bricks or stones. Once you have gone completely around the circle with the bricks, start adding layers to the bricks. How high you build the fire pit is completely up to you. If you have young children around, it is probably safest to make the walls of the backyard fire pits at least two feet high so it is clearly visible.

If you don’t want to go with the traditional look of stone or brick, you can get creative. You can create a backyard fire pit using an old tractor tire rim or a washing machine drum. Anything that is not flammable and round or square with the middle part open can be used as a frame for a backyard fire pit.

If you plan to use your backyard fire pits for cooking, you want to make sure you get a screen or a grate to put over the fire. Simply using it to roast marshmallows won’t require a screen. Hamburgers, however, will require a screen or grate. You can purchase one from a home and garden outlet, or you can get an old one off an unused grill. Either way, it only needs to be large enough to extend past the edge of the fire pit wall. Then you can simply set the screen or grate on top of the fire pit wall, and then use it as a cooking surface.
